She Who Watches is based on the Wishram story of Chief Tsagaglalal (Suh-GOG-la-lal), a woman who lived on the cliffs above the Columbia River. One day Coyote came along and asked the chief what her greatest wish would be.
"I would like to watch over my people forever," Tsagaglalal said.
Coyote, being a powerful trickster, turned her into a rock.
Chief Tsagaglalal is still there today, watching over us. You can find her petroglyph/pictograph at Columbia Hills State Park near Dallesport, Washington (photo #10).
She Who Watches is made solely from repurposed metal. The rust has been removed from the head for added contrast.
