Expecting to Fly Sculpture and Canvas
Part of the Imagine Collection, this mixed media piece brings together metal sculpture and painting. The sculpture “comes to life” as if the owl is flying straight out of the canyon wall. Watch video below.
Expecting to Fly is based on the Barrier Canyon Style Owl Petroglyph Panel near Moab, Utah (photo # 9).
Stucco and acrylic paint are used to create the rock wall look on the high-quality canvas. The sculpture is made from salvaged steel that has been given a metallic sheen with the help of an angle grinder.
Dimensions…
Canvas: 24 inches tall, 36 inches wide, 1.5 inches deep
Sculpture: 21.5 inches tall, 17.5 inches wide
This collection was inspired by a quote from artist and archeologist Carolyn Boyd:
“In Native America, those images, as soon as they are applied to the wall, they are living. They are incarnated. We can’t even imagine what that would be like — to paint an image of something and give it life.”
